There are many valuable secondary metabolites in plants, which could be used for various commercial and therapeutic purposes. Until now, direct extraction from plants has been widely performed to obtain useful plant secondary metabolites. However, there have been serious limitations, that is, difficulty of providing source plants, producing low amounts of metabolites of interest, and causing environmental problems due to felling trees. Plant cell culture is a kind of biotechnology to highly produce metabolites of interest by large-scale fermentation of plant cell, which makes it possible to solve the problems mentioned above. This technology consists of plant cell culture including biochemical and physiological research, extraction and purification, and large-scale fermentation. The research team of SamYang Genex succeeded in developing a cell line which produces high yields of Genexol¢ç at large scale, and many research involved in Genexol¢ç is under progress.
Corn Sweetener is a general term of sweeteners made from starch through the processes of hydrolyzation, transition-polymerization and isomerization etc.
Corn Sweeteners have characteristics that their own sweetness, solubility, viscosity, crystallinity, hygroscopicity and the other attributes vary with degree of hydrolyzation. There are glucose, fructose, corn syrup, oligosaccharides etc. and sugar alcohols made by hydrogenation of previous materials.

Corn sweeteners are essential to food since they play a role in sweetening, moisture-holding, reactions with other ingredients and control of bio-functions etc. SAMYANG GENEX Food R&D Center will continue works for various product lines of corn sweeteners, oligosaccharides and sugar alcohols.
Starch is a natural high-polymeric substance, produced through photosynthesis of plant using water and carbon dioxide. So it is one of the most abundant and renewable resources on earth. There are so many applications of native starches in food and industrial area like thickener, stabilizer, quality enhancer, bulking agent, adhesives etc. Also modified starches, which are developed to cover the defect of natural starches and strengthen their properties by physical and/or chemical method, are widely used.

Specially, recently the center is developing materials and products with the preventive functions against circulatory illness, like hyperlipidemia, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, and so on. Also we are going to study animal, human test, and food applications for nutraceuticals for the future.
